Regarding the Versatility of Skid Steer Backhoe Attachments
Posted by Lee Padgett on 16th Mar 2023
Skid steers themselves may be very like the Swiss Army Knives of the machinery world, since there are so many unique hydraulic attachments manufactured for them.
But, it’s important to note that no single Swiss Army Knife contains every tool. You have to be conscientious about what you choose to ensure the investment will justify itself.
The same goes for skid steer attachments. If you’re thinking about expanding the utility of your team’s skid steer machinery with new attachments, you may have come across skid steer backhoe attachments.
But do they make sense for your crew? Let’s take a closer look.
What Is a Skid Steer Backhoe Attachment?
The term backhoe is various applied to both backhoe machines and to the backhoe attachments themselves, which can get a little confusing.
When referred to as a backhoe loader, the term refers to the entire machine. When referred to as a backhoe or backhoe arm, the term refers only to the attachment or the arm that connects to the backhoe bucket.
The backhoe attachment itself consists of a backhoe arm and bucket. Sometimes, they also have stabilizers that stabilize the machine during operation.
Skid steer backhoe attachments can be used for a wide range of applications in an equally wide range of settings, some of which are detailed below.
In Landscaping
Skid steer backhoe attachments have lots of practical uses for landscaping crews that are equipped with skid steers.
Skid steer backhoes feature a design that is optimized for trenching and digging. While they are not as efficient as excavators or trenchers, they offer excellent versatility.
For instance, skid steer backhoe attachments can be used to dig holes for planting trees, and in the hands of a skilled operator can dig up the trees and replace them; in fact, for smaller trees and shrubs, the backhoe’s bucket is perfect for moving and transplanting root balls.
Backhoe attachments can also be used to dig holes for foundations and pools, prepare new gardens, and do basic grading work for landscaping. They can also dig trenches for setting irrigation lines, sprinklers, and French drains.
While they lack the capacity of a front-loader’s bucket, skid steer backhoe attachments can also be used to move heavy loads of boulders, rocks, gravel soil and mulch. They’re also ideal for precision placement of these materials.
Skid steer backhoe attachments can also be used to remove embedded rocks that are in the way, as well as for uprooting small stumps. While not as powerful as some larger attachments, and though they lack the ability to grind them, they can still pull out and remove smaller stumps.
In Agriculture
Farmers equipped with backhoe attachments for their skid steers or tractors can also reap a large sum of benefits.
Skid steer backhoe attachments are just as useful for farmers or those who run orchards at maintaining their orchards, planting new trees, and transplanting existing trees. For farmers, as for landscaping crews, backhoe attachments can be exceptionally useful for removing small stumps.
For farmers, a skid steer backhoe attachment can also help with land profiling to manage irrigation. They can be used in lieu of a trencher to dig drains, can create grades, and can also be used to dig holes and trenches for irrigation lines.
Farmers can also use backhoe attachments to dig holes for laying fenceposts and foundations, for hauling hay and feed, for carrying or moving soil, or for breaking up hard earth.
In agriculture, skid steer backhoes can also be very useful when it comes to digging ponds, which can be highly useful for farmers. Backhoes can help excavate low areas for setting ponds, which can be used to water livestock, irrigate ponds, raise fish, and of course, provide endless opportunities for recreation.
In Construction
Construction and road crews equipped with skid steer backhoe attachments will also find there are a lot of uses for these versatile pieces of equipment.
Road crews will find backhoe attachments useful for breaking up pavement and hauling away rubble. They can also be used to dig and to a lesser extent, level and compact earth prior to paving.
Construction crews will find backhoe attachments useful for materials transport as well as lifting and loading, especially when equipped with a hydraulic thumb. They can be used to excavate areas before pouring foundations as well.
Moreover, backhoes can be highly useful in small demolition projects, as they can be used to pull or knock down small structures, break up the debris, and then haul it away. This makes backhoes useful for disaster cleanup crews as well.
